Recent Patterns of Competition and Co-operation among Major Container Ports in Asia: An Implication for Busan

Seaports are crucial for regional development as they offer an employment to adjacent societies through industrialisation and value-added services. Since Asia has become a manufacturing hub the world economy with large volume of exports imports, this paper investigates trading pattern container line services three major ports in Asia: that is, Shanghai, Singapore Busan. Ports compete co-operate neighbouring region generate greater throughputs subsequently creat economic values. Utilising liner data from AXS Marine’s Alphaliner database, study proposes inter-dependency ratio way understand degree co-opetition among foreland perspective. The findings suggest that, Singaporean port generates around 40% its without depending on Shanghai Busan, while Busan relies about 90% volume.
